Making a rope from linden bast

Video: Removing the Linden Bast

Steps to make a rope from linden bast:

  • Freshly sawn branches of the lime tree must be watered for a longer period of time (several weeks)

  • peeling off the bast-containing bark

  • under the bark you can pull off the bast strips

  • then hang the raffia to dry

  • dry bast can be further processed if required

  • From the bast fibres, fine cords can be made, e.g. for the fire bow for fire drilling

  • twisting several bast fibers together

  • first knot a loop of about 6 fibers

  • possibly extend with 6 more barrels

  • Hang it and add another loop at the other end

  • with sticks under tension turn clockwise

  • then spoil twice

  • hang with a weight to dry

  • or make thick ropes up to ropes

  • Bast cords were used 6000 years ago
