Video: Removing the Linden Bast
Steps to make a rope from linden bast:
Freshly sawn branches of the lime tree must be watered for a longer period of time (several weeks)
peeling off the bast-containing bark
under the bark you can pull off the bast strips
then hang the raffia to dry
dry bast can be further processed if required
From the bast fibres, fine cords can be made, e.g. for the fire bow for fire drilling
twisting several bast fibers together
first knot a loop of about 6 fibers
possibly extend with 6 more barrels
Hang it and add another loop at the other end
with sticks under tension turn clockwise
then spoil twice
hang with a weight to dry
or make thick ropes up to ropes
Bast cords were used 6000 years ago
